ROT13 to text

Decode ROT13 back to text, free and online. Paste the scrambled text and every letter moves 13 places in the alphabet, which turns it back into the original. Nothing is uploaded: your browser does the work.

How to decode ROT13

  1. 1Paste or type the text into the box
  2. 2Read the result below, it appears as you type
  3. 3Copy the result with the copy button
  4. The readable text, with capitals kept.

What you get

  • Shift of 13, both ways. The alphabet has 26 letters, so the same step encodes and decodes.
  • Result as you type.No button to press, the result changes with every keystroke.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs in your browser, the text stays on your device.

What you can do

  • Reveal spoilers, jokes and puzzle answers that were hidden with ROT13.
  • Keep capitals as they are: upper and lower case letters are both shifted.
  • Leave digits, spaces, punctuation and letters such as ä or é untouched.

Good to know

  • ROT13 is a puzzle, not encryption. Anyone can undo it, so never use it to protect private information.
  • Only the letters A to Z are changed. Digits and punctuation stay the same, so a ROT13 text is not fully scrambled.
  • Running the result through the tool again gives back the scrambled text.

Questions

How does ROT13 work?

Each letter moves 13 places forward in the alphabet, so A becomes N and N becomes A.

Why does one step both encode and decode?

The alphabet has 26 letters and 13 is half of that. Applying the shift twice brings you back to the start.

Is ROT13 secure?

No. It hides text from a casual glance only, and anyone can reverse it in a second.
