SHA-256 hash generator
Calculate the SHA-256 hash of text online, free. You get the 64-character hex digest that download pages, blockchains and certificates rely on. The other hashes are listed with it, and nothing is uploaded.
How to calculate a SHA-256 hash online
- 1Type or paste your text, or drop a text file
- 2Read the hash in the list as you type
- 3Press the copy button, or choose Uppercase
- A 64-character SHA-256 digest, in hex.
What happens to your data
- Nothing is uploaded. The hash is calculated in your browser. Your text and files stay on your device.
- The everyday safe choice.SHA-256 has no known practical attack and is the usual pick for integrity.
- 64 hex characters.Always the same length, whatever the size of the text.
What you can do
- Get the SHA-256 of any text, updated as you type.
- Show the digest in capitals with "Uppercase", to match how a download page prints it.
- Add an HMAC key to see HMAC-SHA-256 next to it.
- Drop a downloaded file on the "File checksum" tab, paste the SHA-256 from the vendor and see "Matches" or "Doesn't match".
- Copy the result as a sha256sum-style line from that tab.
Good to know
- SHA-256 is fast by design, so it is the wrong tool for storing passwords. Use bcrypt or Argon2 there.
- The text is hashed as UTF-8, exactly as typed. A space or newline at the end changes the whole hash.
- A published SHA-256 only proves the file is intact if you got the hash from a trusted place, not the same server as the file.
Questions
What is SHA-256?
A hash function from the SHA-2 family. It turns any data into a 256-bit fingerprint, written as 64 hex characters.
How do I check a download's SHA-256?
Open the "File checksum" tab, drop the file and paste the published hash. The tool tells you if it matches.
Is SHA-256 encryption?
No. A hash cannot be turned back into the text. It only gives a fingerprint to compare.
Is SHA-256 secure?
Yes, for integrity and signatures. For passwords, add a slow hash such as bcrypt or Argon2 instead.
