Hash generator
Hash text with MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC32 at once. Type or paste, and all six results are listed together, ready to copy. Add an HMAC key to get keyed hashes too. Nothing is uploaded.
How to hash text online
- 1Type or paste your text, or drop a text file
- 2Read the hash in the list as you type
- 3Press the copy button, or choose Uppercase
- Six hashes of your text, side by side.
What happens to your data
- Nothing is uploaded. The hash is calculated in your browser. Your text and files stay on your device.
- Six hashes in one list.No need to switch tools or run the text again for each algorithm.
- Updates as you type. The list refreshes after each keystroke, so there is no button to press.
What you can do
- See MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC32 of your text at the same time.
- Enter an optional HMAC key to add HMAC-SHA-1, HMAC-SHA-256, HMAC-SHA-384 and HMAC-SHA-512 lines.
- Switch the output to capital letters with "Uppercase".
- Drop a text file to hash its content, and see how many bytes were hashed.
- Use the "File checksum" tab for any file, such as an ISO, and compare it with a published hash.
Good to know
- The text is hashed as UTF-8, exactly as typed, including spaces and line breaks. A single trailing newline changes every hash.
- MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security use. The page says so too: use SHA-256, and bcrypt or Argon2 for passwords.
- Empty input still shows the hashes of empty text, so the list is never blank.
Questions
Which hash should I use?
SHA-256 for most things. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine to match old checksums, but not to protect anything.
Does it hash files too?
Text files dropped on the text box are read as text. For binary files, such as a download, open the "File checksum" tab.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The hashes are calculated in your browser, and your text never leaves your device.
Can I hash a password with this?
You can, but a plain hash is a poor way to store passwords. Use a slow password hash such as bcrypt or Argon2 for that.
