MD5 hash generator
Calculate the MD5 hash of text online, free. You get the 32-character hex digest, handy for matching an old checksum or a cache key. The other hashes are listed with it. Nothing is uploaded: MD5 runs in your browser.
How to calculate a MD5 hash online
- 1Type or paste your text, or drop a text file
- 2Read the hash in the list as you type
- 3Press the copy button, or choose Uppercase
- A 32-character MD5 digest, in hex.
What happens to your data
- Nothing is uploaded. The hash is calculated in your browser. Your text and files stay on your device.
- Own MD5 code.Browsers have no built-in MD5, so the tool carries its own.
- Other hashes included.SHA-1, SHA-256 and more appear in the same list.
What you can do
- Get the MD5 of any text, updated as you type.
- Show the digest in lowercase or in capitals with "Uppercase".
- Drop a text file to hash its content.
- Check a downloaded file against its published MD5 on the "File checksum" tab: paste the expected hash and see "Matches" or "Doesn't match".
Good to know
- MD5 is broken: two different inputs can be made to give the same digest. Use it to spot accidents, not to protect anything.
- Do not store passwords as MD5. Use bcrypt or Argon2.
- The text is hashed as UTF-8, exactly as typed. A trailing newline changes the digest.
- The digest is always 32 hex characters, whatever the length of the text.
Questions
What is an MD5 hash?
A fixed 32-character fingerprint of data. The same text always gives the same MD5, and a small change gives a completely different one.
Can an MD5 hash be reversed?
Not directly. But short or common texts can be looked up in tables of known hashes, so MD5 does not hide them.
Is MD5 still safe to use?
For checking that a file arrived intact, mostly yes. For signatures, certificates or passwords, no.
How do I get the MD5 of a file?
Open the "File checksum" tab and drop the file. It shows MD5 and the other hashes.
