Checksum verifier
Check that a download is intact: drop the file, paste the checksum from the download page, and see "Matches" or "Doesn't match". It recognizes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC32 by the length of the hash. The file stays on your device.
How to verify a file checksum
- 1Drop the file in, or click to choose it
- 2Paste the published hash into "Compare with a checksum"
- 3Read the verdict under the box
- A clear "Matches" or "Doesn't match" for that file.
What you get
- Nothing is uploaded. The file is hashed by your browser. It is never sent anywhere.
- The hash type is detected. Its length tells the tool whether it is MD5, SHA or CRC32.
- Pasted lines work.A line from sha256sum or an SRI string such as sha256-… is understood.
What you can do
- Compare a file against the hash printed on a download page or in a release note.
- Paste a hash in lower or upper case, with or without 0x. Only the first word of what you paste is used, so a full "hash filename" line from sha256sum works.
- Accept SRI strings (sha256-, sha384-, sha512- followed by base64), as used in web integrity checks.
- See all six checksums of the file as well, and copy them as a sha256sum-style checksum file.
Good to know
- A match means the file is byte for byte what the publisher hashed. It does not prove the publisher is trustworthy, so get the hash from the official site.
- The whole file is read into memory. Very large files are limited by your device and may show a "Try a device with more memory" error.
- A hash that is not a known length shows "That isn't a known hash (MD5, SHA or CRC32)." Check that you copied all of it.
Questions
How do I check a file against its SHA-256 checksum?
Drop the file in, paste the SHA-256 from the download page into "Compare with a checksum", and read "Matches" or "Doesn't match".
What if it says "Doesn't match"?
The file differs from the one that was hashed. Download it again, and check that you pasted the right hash for that exact file.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read and hashed in your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
