Add prefix/suffix to filenames
Put text in front of or after the name of many files at once, for example a date, a project code or "_final". The suffix goes before the extension, so report.pdf stays a PDF. You see every new name before anything is renamed, and nothing is uploaded.
How to add a prefix or suffix to filenames
- 1Drop your files in, or choose a folder
- 2Type the text in "Prefix" and "Suffix"
- 3Check the "Becomes" column and save
- Every file with your text added, extensions intact.
What happens to your files
- Extensions stay put.The suffix lands between the name and the extension: scan.pdf becomes scan_v2.pdf.
- Preview first.A table shows each old and new name side by side, so you can see it before you save.
- Nothing is uploaded. The renaming happens in your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Add text before the name with "Prefix", after it with "Suffix", or both in one go.
- Combine it with the other options on the same page: numbering, a find and replace, or a new case.
- In Chrome and Edge on a computer, rename the files where they are in a folder you choose, with an Undo button. Other browsers give you renamed copies in a ZIP.
Good to know
- Spaces and punctuation you type are used as they are. If you want a separator, put it in the field yourself, for example "2026-".
- Prefix and suffix are added last, so the other options (case, spaces, numbering) do not change the text you typed.
- If two files would end up with the same name, they turn red and saving is blocked until you fix it, for example by adding numbering.
Questions
How do I add text to the end of a filename but before the extension?
Type it in "Suffix". The extension is kept apart, so "photo.jpg" with the suffix "_edit" becomes "photo_edit.jpg".
Can I add a prefix to a whole folder of files?
Yes, in Chrome or Edge on a computer: choose the folder, tick "Include subfolders" if you want, and the files are renamed in place. Elsewhere you drop the files in and get a ZIP of renamed copies.
Can I undo it?
In place, yes: an "Undo" button puts the old names back. With a ZIP your originals are never touched.
