Rename files to lowercase
Rename many files to lowercase in one go, so "IMG_0042 Final" becomes "img_0042 final". This page starts on the lowercase option, shows every new name first, and uploads nothing: the renaming happens in your browser.
How to rename files to lowercase
- 1Drop your files in, or choose a folder
- 2Leave "Case" on lowercase
- 3Check the table, then rename or download
- The same files with all-lowercase names.
What happens to your files
- Lowercase from the start. The "Case" menu is already set to lowercase when the page opens.
- Case-only changes are handled. In place, a name that differs only in case is renamed safely.
- Nothing is uploaded.Renaming happens in your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Turn every file name to lowercase with the "Case" menu preset.
- Switch the same menu to UPPERCASE, Title Case, snake_case or camelCase if you change your mind.
- Add spaces to dashes, transliteration or numbering in the same pass.
- Rename in place in Chrome or Edge on a computer, with Undo, or download renamed copies as a ZIP.
Good to know
- The extension is not changed: photo.JPG becomes photo.JPG. Type a new extension such as jpg in "New extension" to lowercase it too.
- Files that differ only in case, such as Readme and README, would end up with the same name and are flagged as a clash.
- On Windows and macOS, which ignore case in names, in-place renaming still works: a case-only change is done in two steps.
Questions
How do I rename all files to lowercase?
Drop them in, keep "Case" on lowercase, and rename in place in Chrome or Edge, or download the ZIP of renamed copies.
Does it lowercase the extension too?
No, only the name. To get .jpg instead of .JPG, type jpg in "New extension".
Why would I want lowercase filenames?
Web servers and Linux treat Photo.jpg and photo.jpg as different files, so lowercase avoids broken links.
