Remove spaces from filenames
Get rid of spaces in many filenames at once. "My holiday photo.jpg" becomes "My-holiday-photo.jpg", which is safer in web addresses, scripts and the command line. You see every new name first, and nothing is uploaded.
How to remove spaces from filenames
- 1Drop your files in, or choose a folder
- 2Leave "Spaces to dashes" ticked
- 3Check the table, then rename or download
- The same files with dashes where the spaces were.
What happens to your files
- Spaces become dashes.Several spaces in a row turn into one dash, and the extension is kept.
- Preview first.Old and new names sit side by side before you save.
- Nothing is uploaded.Renaming happens in your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Turn every space in a name into a dash, with "Spaces to dashes" ticked from the start.
- Want underscores instead? Type a space in "Find" and an underscore in "Replace with", and untick the dashes option.
- Add the other options if you like: lowercase, removing special characters or numbering.
- Rename in place in Chrome or Edge on a computer, with Undo, or download renamed copies as a ZIP.
Good to know
- Only spaces and other whitespace in the name are changed. Other awkward characters stay unless you tick "Remove special characters".
- Spaces at the very start or end of a name also turn into a dash. Remove them with the find and replace fields first if you do not want that.
- If two files would end up with the same name, they turn red and saving is blocked until you fix it.
Questions
How do I replace spaces with underscores?
Untick "Spaces to dashes", type a space in "Find" and an underscore in "Replace with". The table shows the result.
Are spaces in filenames a problem?
Often. They become %20 in web addresses and need quoting in the command line. Dashes avoid that.
Does it change the extension?
No. Only the name part is changed, so photo 1.jpg becomes photo-1.jpg.
