Undo-able rename plan
Plan a batch rename, check it, and take a script that does it on your own computer, with a dry run first and an undo script written before anything is renamed. It comes as bash for Mac and Linux or PowerShell for Windows. Nothing is uploaded.
How to make an undo-able rename script
- 1Drop your files in and set your rename rules
- 2Choose "Mac or Linux" or "Windows", then download the helper
- 3Run it once to preview, then again with --apply
- A rename-helper script that renames safely and can be undone.
What happens to your files
- Dry run first.Run as it is, the script only lists what it would rename and changes nothing.
- Undo script included. With --apply (-Apply on Windows) it writes an undo script before renaming.
- Nothing is uploaded. The plan is made in your browser. The script runs on your own computer.
What you can do
- Build the plan with all rename rules: find and replace, regex, prefix, suffix, case, numbering and a new extension.
- Download "rename-helper.sh" for Mac and Linux or "rename-helper.ps1" for Windows. The right one is preselected.
- The script checks again before renaming, refuses to overwrite an existing file and lists missing files.
- It renames in two passes through temporary names, so swaps like a to b and b to a work. In Chrome or Edge you can also rename in place and use "Undo" or "Save the list" (CSV).
Good to know
- Put the script in the folder with the files. It renames the real files there, so try it on copies of a few files first.
- The helper button is off until the plan has no clashes. Fix red rows first, for example with numbering.
- The undo script is named undo-rename- followed by the date and time. Phones cannot run scripts, so they only get a ZIP of renamed copies.
Questions
How do I run the rename script?
On Mac or Linux: bash rename-helper.sh to preview, then bash rename-helper.sh --apply. On Windows, use the PowerShell command shown on the page, with -Apply for the real run.
How do I undo the rename?
Run the undo script the helper wrote next to your files. It puts every old name back.
Is anything uploaded or sent?
No. The plan and the script are made in your browser. The script then works locally on your computer.
