Regex file renamer
Rename many files with a regular expression: match a pattern in each name, keep parts of it in capture groups and put them back in a new order with $1, $2. You see every new name first, and nothing is uploaded.
How to rename files with a regex
- 1Drop your files in, or choose a folder
- 2Tick "Use regex", then fill "Find" and "Replace with"
- 3Check the table, then rename or download
- Your files renamed by your pattern, one result per file.
What happens to your files
- Capture groups work.Wrap parts of the pattern in brackets and reuse them as $1, $2 in the replacement.
- Live preview. The table updates as you type, and a syntax error is reported, not hidden.
- Nothing is uploaded.Renaming happens in your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Reorder parts of a name, for example "(\d+)-(\d+)-(\d+)_(.*)" with "$4_$1$2$3" turns 2026-10-06_trip into trip_20261006.
- Use named groups with lt;name>, and amp; for the whole match.
- Delete matches by leaving "Replace with" empty.
- Add the other options on top: numbering, case or prefix, then rename in place in Chrome or Edge, or download a ZIP.
Good to know
- It uses JavaScript regular expressions and always replaces every match in a name. There is no field for flags such as case-insensitive, so use character classes like [Ii].
- The pattern is applied to the name without its extension, so you cannot match the extension.
- A pattern that is not valid shows "That regex has a syntax error." and the names stay as they were.
Questions
How do I use capture groups to rename files?
Put brackets around the part you want to keep, then write $1, $2 and so on in "Replace with".
Which regex flavor is it?
JavaScript. Lookaheads, lookbehinds and named groups work. Flags cannot be set, and every match in a name is replaced.
Can I test the pattern first?
Yes. The table shows the new name of every file as you type, and nothing changes until you rename or download.
