Transliterate filenames
Turn accented letters in many filenames into plain ones: ä to ae, ö to oe, ü to ue, ß to ss, and é, ñ, ç and the like to e, n, c. Case and everything else stay as they are. You see every new name first, and nothing is uploaded.
How to transliterate filenames
- 1Drop your files in, or choose a folder
- 2Leave "Transliterate (ä→ae, é→e)" ticked
- 3Check the table, then rename or download
- Files whose names use plain letters only, with the rest unchanged.
What happens to your files
- German rules for umlauts.ä, ö, ü and ß become ae, oe, ue and ss, capitals too: Ä becomes Ae.
- Other accents are stripped.é becomes e, ñ becomes n, ç becomes c.
- Nothing is uploaded.Renaming happens in your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Replace umlauts and ß with their usual two-letter spelling, as in "Müller Straße.pdf" to "Mueller Strasse.pdf".
- Remove accents from the Latin letters that carry them, such as à, é, ñ, ç and š.
- Leave spaces, case and punctuation alone, so you can add "Spaces to dashes" or lowercase only if you want.
- Rename in place in Chrome or Edge on a computer, with Undo, or download renamed copies as a ZIP.
Good to know
- Letters that have no accent to strip, such as ø, ł, æ and þ, are left as they are, as are letters in other scripts. Use find and replace for those.
- Only the name is changed, not the extension.
- If two files end up with the same name, for example "Müller" and "Mueller", they turn red and saving is blocked until you fix it.
Questions
How do I replace ä with ae in many filenames?
Leave "Transliterate (ä→ae, é→e)" ticked, drop the files in and rename. ä, ö, ü and ß turn into ae, oe, ue and ss.
What is the difference to slugify?
Transliterating only fixes accents. Slugify also lowercases, and replaces spaces and punctuation with hyphens.
Why remove accents from filenames?
Older tools, some servers and some sync services garble accented names, so plain letters travel safely.
