Find and replace in filenames
Find a piece of text in many filenames and replace it, for example "IMG_" with "holiday-" or "copy of " with nothing. It works as plain text or, with "Use regex", as a pattern. You see the result for every file first, and nothing is uploaded.
How to find and replace in filenames
- 1Drop your files in, or choose a folder
- 2Fill in "Find" and "Replace with"
- 3Check the table, then rename or download
- Your files with the text swapped in every name.
What happens to your files
- Every match changes. All occurrences in a name are replaced, not just the first.
- Plain or regex.Tick "Use regex" when you need a pattern instead of fixed text.
- Nothing is uploaded.Renaming happens in your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Replace fixed text in every name, or leave "Replace with" empty to delete it.
- Tick "Use regex" to match a pattern. A broken pattern shows "That regex has a syntax error." instead of crashing.
- Mix it with the other options on the page, such as numbering or a new case.
- Rename in place in Chrome or Edge on a computer, with Undo, or download renamed copies as a ZIP.
Good to know
- The search covers the name without its extension. To change the extension use "New extension".
- Matching is case-sensitive. "img" will not find "IMG".
- If two files would end up with the same name, they turn red and saving is blocked until you fix it.
Questions
How do I remove a word from many filenames?
Type it in "Find" and leave "Replace with" empty. Every match in every name is deleted.
Is the search case-sensitive?
Yes. Type the text exactly as it appears, or use a regex such as [Ii][Mm][Gg].
Can I use regular expressions?
Yes, tick "Use regex". It uses JavaScript regular expressions and replaces every match in each name.
