Slugify filenames
Turn many filenames into web-safe slugs: lowercase, no accents, words joined by single hyphens. "Mein Foto (1).JPG" becomes "mein-foto-1.JPG". You see every new name first, and nothing is uploaded.
How to slugify filenames
- 1Drop your files in, or choose a folder
- 2Leave "Case" on slug-case
- 3Check the table, then rename or download
- Files with lowercase, hyphenated names that are safe in a URL.
What happens to your files
- Safe in a web address.Only a to z, 0 to 9 and hyphens remain in the name.
- Accents are converted.ä becomes ae, ß becomes ss, é becomes e.
- Nothing is uploaded.Renaming happens in your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Lowercase the name, convert accents, and replace every run of other characters with a single hyphen.
- Trim hyphens from the start and end, so "(draft) notes!" becomes "draft-notes".
- Mix it with numbering or a prefix for ordered, URL-friendly names.
- Rename in place in Chrome or Edge on a computer, with Undo, or download renamed copies as a ZIP.
Good to know
- Only the name is slugified. The extension is left as it is, so .JPG stays .JPG. Type jpg in "New extension" to lowercase it.
- Letters outside the Latin alphabet, such as Cyrillic or Chinese, are dropped. A name made only of them ends up empty, so use numbering for those.
- Different names can slugify to the same result, for example "A B" and "a-b". Those rows turn red and saving waits until you fix them.
Questions
What does slugify mean for filenames?
It makes a name URL-friendly: lowercase letters and digits only, words separated by single hyphens.
Does it handle German umlauts?
Yes. ä, ö, ü and ß become ae, oe, ue and ss before the rest is cleaned.
Why use slugs for filenames?
They need no escaping in web addresses, scripts or the command line, and they behave the same on every system.
