SHA-1 hash generator

Calculate the SHA-1 hash of text online, free. You get the 40-character hex digest, the format Git object IDs and many older checksums use. SHA-256 and the other hashes are listed with it. Nothing is uploaded.

How to calculate a SHA-1 hash online

  1. 1Type or paste your text, or drop a text file
  2. 2Read the hash in the list as you type
  3. 3Press the copy button, or choose Uppercase
  4. A 40-character SHA-1 digest, in hex.

What happens to your data

  • Nothing is uploaded. The hash is calculated in your browser. Your text and files stay on your device.
  • 40 hex characters. The same length Git uses for its object IDs.
  • Newer hashes alongside.SHA-256 and SHA-512 sit in the same list, in case you need to move on.

What you can do

  • Get the SHA-1 of any text, updated as you type.
  • Switch the digest to capitals with "Uppercase".
  • Add an HMAC key to see HMAC-SHA-1 too, which is still used by older signing schemes.
  • Check a download against a published SHA-1 on the "File checksum" tab: paste it and see whether it matches.

Good to know

  • SHA-1 is no longer collision resistant. Browsers and certificate authorities have dropped it. Use SHA-256 for anything new.
  • It is fine for matching existing checksums and legacy systems.
  • A Git object ID is not the SHA-1 of the file alone: Git adds a header first, so the values will not match.

Questions

What is SHA-1?

A hash function that turns data into a 160-bit value, written as 40 hex characters. It was designed by the NSA and published in 1995.

Is SHA-1 broken?

For collisions, yes: researchers made two different files with the same SHA-1 in 2017. It is still fine for spotting accidental changes.

Does this give the same hash as git hash-object?

No. Git hashes a short header plus the content, so the SHA-1 of the plain text differs.

How long is a SHA-1 hash?

Always 40 hex characters, 20 bytes, whatever the length of the input.
