Word counter for DOCX
Count the words in a Word file (.docx) or an OpenDocument file without opening Word. You get the word count, the number of pages and the reading time. The file is read in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
How to count words in a DOCX file
- 1Drop a .docx or .odt file onto the page, or click to choose it
- 2Read the word count that appears
- 3Check the page estimate and reading time below it
- A word count, with pages and reading time.
What you get
- A number in a second.Drop the file in and the word count appears, no Word needed.
- Pages and reading time.An estimate of the pages and the minutes it takes to read.
- Nothing is uploaded.Your file is read by your browser, so essays and manuscripts stay with you.
What you can do
- Count the words of a Word (.docx) or OpenDocument (.odt) file.
- Count Markdown, HTML, plain text and PDF files in the same way. A PDF is counted by its text.
- See how many pages the text is, at 300 words a page.
- See how long it takes to read, at 230 words a minute.
- Check a thesis, an assignment or an article against a word limit without opening it in Word.
Good to know
- The count covers the text of the document: headings, paragraphs, lists and tables. Words are separated by spaces and line breaks.
- Pages and reading time are estimates from the word count, not the page count Word would show. Fonts and margins change that.
- One file at a time. The older .doc format is not supported, so save it as .docx first.
- A scanned PDF has no text to count, so its count is zero.
Questions
How do I count words in a Word document without Word?
Drop the .docx file onto this page. The word count shows up at once, with an estimate of pages and reading time.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The file is read by your browser on your own device. It is never sent to us or anyone else.
How are the pages and reading time worked out?
Pages assume 300 words a page, and reading time assumes 230 words a minute. They are estimates, not the layout of your file.
Can I count other file types?
Yes. Besides DOCX it reads OpenDocument (.odt), Markdown, HTML, plain text and PDF files.
