Blur background

Blur the background of a photo and keep the subject sharp, the way a camera does with a wide aperture. Let the depth of the scene decide, or mark the sharp area yourself with a brush. Free, online, and the photo stays on your device.

How to blur the background of a photo

  1. 1Drop a photo in or click to choose it
  2. 2Choose "By depth" and tap what should be in focus, or "Mark it"
  3. 3Set "Blur" and "Soft edge", then download the JPG
  4. One JPG with a sharp subject and a blurred background.

What happens to your files

  • The photo stays on your device.Blurring happens in your browser. Only the AI model for "By depth" is downloaded, once.
  • Two ways to choose."By depth" blurs more the further something is from your focus point. "Mark it" blurs everything outside your brush.
  • You see it while you work. The preview changes as you move the sliders, and the JPG is saved at the photo's own size.

What you can do

  • "By depth" estimates how far away each part of the photo is. Tap the part that should be in focus, and everything further from it gets softer step by step. "Depth of field" sets how deep the sharp zone is.
  • "Mark it" starts with a soft oval in the middle of the photo, where the subject usually is. Paint with the brush, or use "Pick by color" to take the area of a wall or sky around your tap, as "Keep sharp" or "Blur".
  • On a computer, "Find it with AI" outlines the subject for you with the same model as the background remover. You can then correct it with the brush.
  • "Blur" sets how strong the blur is, "Soft edge" how smoothly it fades into the sharp area. "Undo" takes back your last brush strokes.

Good to know

  • The result is a JPG (quality 92), named like your photo with "-blurred" added. Transparency is not kept.
  • Very large photos are scaled down first: to 4096 pixels on the long side, and to 2048 on a phone.
  • On a phone, "Find it with AI" is not offered, because that model needs too much memory. "By depth" works there.

Questions

Can I blur the background of a photo for free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and runs in your browser. The photo is not sent to a server.

How does "By depth" know what is in the background?

A depth model on your device estimates the distance of every part of the photo. The first time you use it, the model is downloaded once.

Can I blur only part of the photo myself?

Yes. Choose "Mark it", paint over what should stay sharp, and switch to "Blur" to paint areas back into the blur.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap the subject in "By depth", or paint with a finger. Only "Find it with AI" is left out on phones.
