LAB to HEX
A free LAB to HEX converter: enter the three Lab numbers from a brand guide, a color measurement or a design file and get the hex code for the web. Type 54 -40 30 and you get #39924A. If the Lab color lies outside what a screen can show, you get the nearest hex color and a note that says so.
How to convert LAB to HEX
- 1Type L, a and b into "Color", for example 54 -40 30
- 2Or paste a full value such as lab(54% -40 30)
- 3Copy the hex code from the big line with "Copy"
- A hex code such as #39924A for your CSS or design tool
How it works
- Plain numbers are enough. On this page three numbers are read as L, a and b, with spaces or commas between them
- Honest about the gamut.A Lab color that HEX cannot hold is mapped to the nearest one, and the page tells you
- Nothing is sent anywhere.Your browser does the arithmetic on your own device
What you can do
- Turn L, a and b into a six digit hex code, written in capitals such as #39924A
- Write Lab the CSS way too: L in percent, and a and b as percentages where 100% stands for 125
- Compare your color and the hex result side by side in the swatch, and see RGB, HSL, CMYK, LCH and OKLCH below
- Check whether the color has a CSS name or a Tailwind color close to it, with the ΔE (CIEDE2000) between them
Good to know
- Lab can describe colors that sRGB, the range of HEX and rgb(), does not have. Then HEX shows the nearest color inside it, with less chroma but the same lightness and hue (the CSS Color 4 way)
- L must lie between 0 and 100. a and b have no fixed limit, but very large values land outside sRGB
- The tool reads Lab with the D50 white that CSS uses. Lab values measured for D65 come out slightly different
- HEX has whole steps only, so going back from the hex code gives Lab values that differ a little from the ones you typed
Questions
How do I convert Lab to hex?
Type the three Lab numbers into the field, for example 62.5 30 -50. The hex code, here #A786F1, appears in the big line. Click "Copy" to take it.
Why does my Lab color show a note about sRGB?
Your Lab value lies outside sRGB, so no hex code matches it exactly. lab(50% 80 -110), for example, becomes #8E5DFF, the nearest color a screen in sRGB can show.
Can I type a, b with a minus sign?
Yes. Negative a is greener, negative b is bluer. Write the minus right before the number, as in 54 -40 30.
Does the tool send my values anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. No request is made with the color you type.
