Nano ID generator

Generate Nano ID style IDs online: short, URL-safe strings made of letters, digits, underscore and hyphen. Choose the length and how many you need, then copy them. Nothing is uploaded: the IDs are made in your browser.

How to generate Nano IDs

  1. 1Set how many IDs you want
  2. 2Set the length, 20 by default
  3. 3Click "Generate", then copy the list
  4. Short IDs you can use in a URL as they are.

What you get

  • URL-safe.Only A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, _ and - are used, so no encoding is needed in a link.
  • Secure randomness. The characters come from your browser's crypto random generator.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The IDs are made on your device.

What you can do

  • Make IDs of 4 to 256 characters. The default is 20.
  • Make 1 to 500 IDs in one go.
  • Use them as short keys, slugs, file names or share codes.
  • Copy the list with one button.

Good to know

  • The alphabet is the Nano ID one: 64 characters, 26 uppercase, 26 lowercase, 10 digits, _ and -.
  • The default length is 20, not the 21 of the Nano ID library. Set 21 if you want to match it.
  • Random IDs are not sorted by time. For that, use ULID or UUID v7.

Questions

What is a Nano ID?

A short, random, URL-safe ID. It is shorter than a UUID and easy to put in a link.

How long should a Nano ID be?

The longer, the less likely a repeat. 20 characters is a good default for most uses.

Can I use them in URLs?

Yes. Every character is safe in a URL.

Is this the official Nano ID library?

No. It makes IDs with the same alphabet and the browser's secure random generator, but it is its own code.
