Secret key generator

Generate a secret key online: random hex strings for the SECRET_KEY, APP_SECRET or JWT secret of a Django, Laravel or Node app. Pick how many bytes you want and copy the result. The keys are made in your browser and never uploaded.

How to generate a secret key

  1. 1Set how many keys you want
  2. 2Set the length in bytes, 20 by default
  3. 3Click "Generate", then copy the key
  4. Hex keys, two characters per byte.

What you get

  • Made on your device.A secret that is uploaded is no longer secret. These never leave your browser.
  • Secure randomness.Every byte comes from the browser's crypto random generator.
  • You pick the strength. From 4 to 256 random bytes per key.

What you can do

  • Make keys of 4 to 256 bytes. Each byte is written as two hex characters, so 32 bytes give 64 characters.
  • Make 1 to 500 keys in one go.
  • Use them as a Django SECRET_KEY, a Laravel or other framework secret, or an HMAC key for signing JWTs.
  • Copy with one button.

Good to know

  • The "Length" field counts bytes, not characters. The default of 20 bytes gives 40 hex characters.
  • Only 0 to 9 and a to f appear. If your framework wants base64 or a special format, convert it yourself.
  • The tool does not store anything. Put the key in an environment variable or secret manager and never in your repository.

Questions

How long should a secret key be?

For an HMAC or JWT secret, 32 bytes (64 hex characters) is a common choice. The default of 20 bytes is a minimum.

Can I use it as a Django SECRET_KEY?

Yes. Django accepts any long random string, and a hex key works.

Is the key sent anywhere?

No. It is made in your browser and shown only to you.

Why hex and not base64?

Hex uses only digits and a to f, so it is safe in .env files, shells and URLs without quoting.
