- The sound of your video as a MP3 file.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your video is read by your browser, on your own device.
- No account needed. You do not sign up, and nothing is added to your sound.
- No re-encoding when it can be.AAC sound goes into M4A, and MP3 sound into MP3, as it is.
What you can do
- Save the sound of a video as M4A (AAC), MP3 or WAV. The format of this page is already chosen, and you can change it.
- Choose 128, 192 or 320 kbit/s for M4A and MP3. WAV is uncompressed, so it has no bitrate.
- See before you start whether the sound is copied or re-encoded, and for WAV about how large the file will be.
- Keep the video as it is: only the sound is read, and the video part is dropped.
Good to know
- MKV is the Matroska container. It can hold several audio tracks, subtitles and almost any codec, and is common for downloaded films and screen recordings.
- MP3 is the lossy audio format that plays on practically every device and player. 192 kbit/s is fine for most music and 320 kbit/s is the highest quality.
- A video with AAC sound saved as M4A is copied without re-encoding, so there is no quality loss. A video with MP3 sound saved as MP3 is copied too.
- Any other combination is re-encoded, which takes longer and costs a little quality. WAV is uncompressed and large: about 10 MB per minute of stereo sound.
- A video without sound gives no file, and the tool tells you so. Your browser must support WebCodecs, otherwise the button stays off.
Questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser reads the video and writes the audio on your own device. The video is never sent to us or anyone else.
How do I convert MKV to MP3?
Drop the video in, pick MP3 under "Save the sound as" and click "Extract audio". The sound is saved to your downloads.
Does extracting the audio lower the quality?
Not if the sound can be copied: AAC into M4A, or MP3 into MP3. Otherwise it is re-encoded, and a higher bitrate keeps more of the original. WAV is uncompressed.
Which format should I choose?
M4A is recommended: it is small and plays nearly everywhere. MP3 is the most compatible. WAV is for editing, with no compression and big files.
