Speech to text

Turn a recording or a video into text, or speak into your microphone and watch the words appear. Choose German, English, Dutch, French, Spanish or Italian, fix the text, and save it as a Word file or plain text. The audio stays on your device.

How to turn speech into text

What happens to your recording

  • The audio is not uploaded.Speech is turned into text on your device. Only the model is downloaded.
  • One download, then local.The first time, a small speech model (17 MB) loads. After that it runs on your device.
  • Your corrections are kept.Names it gets wrong can be saved once, in this browser only.

What you can do

  • Transcribe an audio or video file: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, WebM, MP4 and MOV work, as long as your browser can read the sound.
  • Dictate with the microphone and see the text grow while you speak. The text box stays editable.
  • Pick the language: German, English, Dutch, French, Spanish or Italian.
  • Say "comma", "full stop" or "new paragraph" (in German "Komma", "Punkt", "neuer Absatz") and get the punctuation and line breaks. You can switch this off.
  • Add "My corrections": write what it heard and what it should write, and the swap is made from then on.
  • Copy the text, or download it as Word (.docx) or text (.txt).

Good to know

  • The language setting matters. A recording in Dutch read as German comes out wrong.
  • The speech model is small, so names, dialect and noisy rooms cause mistakes. Read the text through before you use it.
  • The text is cut at pauses and written piece by piece. A long recording shows how many pieces are still to go.
  • The microphone needs permission and a secure (https) address. Without a microphone, drop a recording instead.
  • Nothing is saved on a server. Download or copy your text before you close the page.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The speech is turned into text by your browser, on your own device. Only the speech model is downloaded, once.

Can I turn an interview video into text?

Yes. Drop the video in. The sound is read from it and written out as text, which you can edit and save as Word.

Which languages work?

German, English, Dutch, French, Spanish and Italian. Pick one before you start.

Does it cost anything or need an account?

No. It is free and you do not sign in.
