- Nothing is uploaded.Your M4A file is read and converted by your browser, on your own device

What you can do
- Turn a M4A file into WAV. WAV is already chosen on this page, and you can switch to MP3, M4A (AAC), WAV (uncompressed), OGG (Opus), AAC or M4R (iPhone ringtone)
- Choose the quality: 64, 96, 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbit/s, with 192 preset. The choice is hidden for WAV and when the sound is copied
- See before you start whether the sound is copied or encoded, and when it is encoded about how large the new file will be
- Keep the title, artist and album tags: they are carried over where the new format holds them
- Follow the progress with the time left, and stop with "Cancel". The result shows its size and a player
Good to know
- M4A is what iPhone Voice Memos and many Android recorders save. Inside is AAC sound, which is small and plays on most phones and players
- WAV holds uncompressed sound: nothing is lost, but the files are large, about 10 MB per minute in CD-quality stereo. It suits editing in an audio program
- Going from one compressed format to another (MP3, AAC, Opus) encodes the sound again and costs a little quality. A higher bitrate keeps more, but cannot bring back what the original lacks
- One file at a time. AMR, WMA, AIFF and MIDI files cannot be read, and the tool says so. It works best in desktop Chrome or Edge
Questions
How do I convert M4A to WAV?
Drop the M4A file in, check that WAV is chosen under "Convert to" and click "Convert". The WAV file is saved to your device.
Is my M4A file uploaded to a server?
No. Nothing is uploaded. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your own device, and no request is made with it.
Does converting M4A to WAV lower the quality?
That depends on the sound inside your file. If it already fits WAV, it is copied as it is and the tool tells you. Otherwise it is encoded again: WAV keeps everything that is there, the other formats lose a little, less at a higher bitrate.
Which quality should I pick?
192 kbit/s is preset and good for music. 64 kbit/s is enough for speech and gives a small file. 320 kbit/s is the highest. A bitrate above that of your original does not make it sound better.
