Metronome
Online metronome: a steady click from 20 to 300 BPM. Pick a time signature, keep the accent on beat one or turn it off, and tap the tempo if you only know how the song feels. The clicks are timed on your browser's audio clock, so they stay even over long practice runs.
How to use the metronome
- 1Set the tempo with the slider, the buttons or by tapping
- 2Choose a time signature, 4/4 if you are not sure
- 3Press Start, and Stop when you are done
- A steady click with the first beat of each bar accented
What you get
- Even timing.Every click is planned ahead on the audio clock, so a busy phone or computer does not make it stumble
- Tap tempo.Tap along with a song a few times and the metronome takes over its tempo
- Bars you can see.One light per beat, the first one bigger, so you can keep your place without counting
What you can do
- Practise at any tempo from 20 to 300 BPM
- Count in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 or 12/8
- Accent beat one, or give every beat the same click
- Find a song's tempo by tapping along
- Change the tempo while it plays, one BPM at a time
Good to know
- Every click is one beat at the tempo you set. In 6/8 that means six clicks per bar
- On an iPhone with an older iOS the silent switch can mute the clicks. If you hear nothing, switch silent mode off
- Space starts and stops the metronome, T taps the tempo
- It keeps playing in a background tab, though changes then take a moment to be heard
Questions
Is this metronome accurate?
Yes. The clicks are planned on the Web Audio clock of your browser, not on a page timer. In our test it ran five minutes at 120 BPM and every beat landed exactly on its time.
How does tap tempo work?
Press Tap tempo, or T on a keyboard, on every beat. After two taps you get a tempo, and it settles as you keep going. Wait more than two seconds and it starts over.
Why don't I hear anything on my iPhone?
On some iOS versions the silent switch mutes sound from web pages. Switch silent mode off and turn the volume up, then press Start again.
What do the Italian words under the tempo mean?
They are the tempo marks used in sheet music, such as Andante or Allegro, so you can match a marking to a BPM.
Is anything recorded or sent?
No. The metronome makes its clicks on your device and does not use the microphone.
