Good to know
- A megabyte (MB) is 1,000 kilobytes, or 1,000,000 bytes. A phone photo is a few megabytes, an MP3 song about the same.
- A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000 megabytes, or 1,000,000,000 bytes. Phone storage, RAM and mobile data plans are counted in gigabytes.
- The units are decimal: 1 kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, not 1,024. Drive makers count this way. Windows counts in steps of 1,024 but still writes GB, so a drive looks smaller there.
- Results are shown with up to 10 significant digits. Very large or very small numbers appear in exponent form, for example 1.5e+16.
Questions
Are my values sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.
How do I convert Megabytes to gigabytes?
Type your value in the “Value” field. The result appears at once, for example 10 megabytes = 0.01 gigabytes. “Swap” turns the conversion around.
Why does my drive show less space than the box says?
The box counts in steps of 1,000, as this tool does. Windows counts in steps of 1,024 and still calls it GB, so it shows a smaller number.
