Wave speed calculator
Solve the wave equation v = f·λ for speed, frequency or wavelength. Enter any two of the three and this wave speed calculator gives the third, in m/s, Hz and meters. Free, and it runs in your browser.
How to calculate wave speed
- 1Leave empty the value you want to find
- 2Fill in the other two: speed, frequency or wavelength
- 3Read all three values in the result
- Speed, frequency and wavelength, with the gap solved.
What you get
- Any one of the three.Speed, frequency or wavelength, whichever you leave empty.
- Sound by default.The start values, 440 Hz and 0.78 m, give about 343 m/s.
- Nothing is uploaded. The numbers are worked out in your browser and not sent anywhere.
What you can do
- Find the wave speed from frequency and wavelength: v = f·λ.
- Find the frequency in Hz from speed and wavelength.
- Find the wavelength in meters from speed and frequency.
- Works for sound, light, water and any other wave, as long as you use m/s, Hz and meters.
Good to know
- Enter exactly two of the three fields. Any other number shows "Enter exactly two of the three."
- Use hertz and meters. A frequency of 2 kHz is 2000 Hz, and 5 cm is 0.05 m.
- The speed field starts empty and the other two hold 440 Hz and 0.78 m, the note A in air.
- The speed of a wave depends on the medium, for example about 343 m/s for sound in air at 20 °C.
Questions
What is the wave equation?
v = f·λ: speed equals frequency times wavelength.
How do I find the wavelength of a sound?
Enter the speed of sound (about 343 m/s in air) and the frequency, and leave the wavelength empty.
Does it work for light?
Yes. With the speed of light, 299 792 458 m/s, enter a frequency in Hz to get the wavelength in meters.
Which units should I use?
Meters per second, hertz and meters. Convert kHz, MHz or centimeters first.
