Work and power calculator
Calculate the work done by a force over a distance, and the power if you know the time. Enter force in newtons, distance in meters and optionally seconds, and get joules and watts. Free, in your browser.
How to calculate work and power
- 1Enter the force in newtons
- 2Enter the distance in meters
- 3Add the time in seconds to get the power
- Work in joules and, with a time, power in watts.
What you get
- Work in joules.Force times distance, as the big number.
- Power in watts.Shown as soon as you give a time above zero.
- Nothing is uploaded. The numbers are worked out in your browser and not sent anywhere.
What you can do
- Calculate work with W = F·d from a force and a distance.
- Calculate power with P = W / t when you add the time.
- Check how much power it takes to lift or push something in a given time.
- Start values are 10 N, 5 m and 2 s, which give 50 J and 25 W.
Good to know
- Time is optional. Without it, or with zero, you only get the work and no power line.
- Force is taken along the direction of the movement. For a force at an angle, use the part along the path.
- Use newtons, meters and seconds. One joule is one newton meter, one watt is one joule per second.
- Force and distance must both be numbers, or the result stays empty.
Questions
What is the formula for work?
Work equals force times distance, W = F·d, measured in joules.
How do I calculate power?
Divide the work by the time, P = W / t. Fill in the time field and the watts appear.
What is a joule?
The work done by a force of one newton over one meter.
Can I convert watts to horsepower?
Yes, with the power converter or the kilowatts to horsepower tool on this site.
