Kinetic and potential energy calculator
Calculate kinetic and potential energy of a moving object from its mass, speed and height. This free calculator adds the two for the total in joules, and lets you choose the gravity of Earth, the Moon or another planet.
How to calculate kinetic and potential energy
- 1Enter the mass in kilograms
- 2Enter the speed in m/s and the height in meters
- 3Pick the gravity and read the energy in joules
- Kinetic, potential and total energy in joules.
What you get
- Three energies.Kinetic, potential and their total, each in joules.
- Your choice of gravity.Earth, Moon, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune.
- Nothing is uploaded. The numbers are worked out in your browser and not sent anywhere.
What you can do
- Calculate kinetic energy as ½mv² from mass and speed.
- Calculate potential energy as mgh from mass, height and gravity.
- See the total, for example for a falling object that has both speed and height.
- Start values are 2 kg, 3 m/s and 10 m, so there is a result right away.
Good to know
- Only the mass has to be filled in. An empty speed or height counts as zero.
- Use kilograms, m/s and meters. Convert km/h by dividing by 3.6.
- Potential energy is measured from the ground level you call zero height.
- The kinetic energy does not depend on gravity, only the potential part does.
Questions
What is the formula for kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy is half the mass times the speed squared, ½mv². Doubling the speed gives four times the energy.
What is the formula for potential energy?
Potential energy is mass times gravity times height, mgh.
Can I find the energy on the Moon?
Yes. Choose Moon as the gravity. The potential energy becomes about a sixth of the Earth value.
Which unit is the result in?
Joules (J). One joule is one newton meter.
