Projectile motion calculator

Work out how far a thrown object travels, how long it flies and how high it climbs. Enter launch speed, angle and height, and this projectile motion calculator draws the path. Free, in your browser, with the gravity of any planet.

How to calculate projectile motion

  1. 1Enter the launch speed and the angle
  2. 2Add a launch height if you throw from above the ground
  3. 3Read the range and flight time, and look at the path
  4. Range, flight time, highest point, landing speed and a path chart.

What you get

  • A drawn path.A chart shows the whole flight, distance against height.
  • Four results.Range, flight time, highest point and landing speed.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The numbers are worked out in your browser and not sent anywhere.

What you can do

  • Get the range, the distance to where the object lands, as the big number.
  • See the flight time, the highest point and the speed at landing.
  • Set a launch height, for example for a throw from a roof or a cliff.
  • Choose the gravity of Earth, the Moon, Mars or another planet and see the path change.

Good to know

  • Air resistance is ignored, so real throws fall shorter, especially fast or light objects.
  • The angle goes from -90° to 90°. A negative angle throws downward.
  • Launch speed and height cannot be below zero. Starts at 20 m/s, 45° and 0 m.
  • Speeds are in m/s. Divide km/h by 3.6 first.

Questions

Which angle gives the longest throw?

On flat ground, 45°. When you throw from a height, the best angle is a little lower.

How do I calculate the range of a projectile?

Enter speed, angle and launch height. The range is the large number: the distance to the landing point.

Is air resistance included?

No. The path is the ideal curve of a parabola.

Can I throw from a height?

Yes. Add a launch height in meters. The flight time and range grow with it.
