Good to know
- MB/s is megabytes per second, 8 megabits per second. Browsers, download managers and file copy dialogs usually show speeds this way.
- Mbps is megabits per second, 1,000,000 bits per second. Internet plans and speed tests give the line speed in Mbps.
- One byte is 8 bits, so 1 MB/s is 8 Mbps. A 100 Mbps line moves at most 12.5 MB/s. Real downloads are often a little slower because of protocol overhead and the server.
- Results are shown with up to 10 significant digits. Very large or very small numbers appear in exponent form, for example 1.5e+16.
Questions
Are my values sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.
How do I convert MB/s to Mbps?
Type your value in the “Value” field. The result appears at once, for example 10 MB/s = 80 mbps. “Swap” turns the conversion around.
Why is my download slower than my internet plan?
Plans give Mbps and downloads show MB/s, which is 8 times smaller. A 100 Mbps plan peaks at 12.5 MB/s, and real speeds are usually a bit lower.
