How to convert a 3D model

What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your model is read and written by your browser, on your own device.
- Checked after writing.The new file is read back, and anything that did not make it across is listed.
- Units and axes are yours.Set the units, a scale and the up axis before you save.
What you can do
- Read GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY, USD, USDZ, FBX, 3MF, DAE (Collada), 3DS and VRML, and write GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY, USDZ, USDA, FBX, 3MF and DAE.
- Choose the units the numbers are written in, a scale factor and the up axis (Z-up or Y-up). The size in the new file is shown before you save.
- Merge all parts into one mesh, or apply transforms so the positions are baked into the vertices. For STL and PLY, pick binary or text.
- Look at the model in the preview first. Drop companion files (.mtl, .bin, textures) or a ZIP together with it.
Good to know
- STL, OBJ and PLY have no unit, so you choose one. 3MF is written in millimetres, FBX in centimetres and the other formats in metres.
- Not every format holds everything. STL keeps only the shape, PLY has no textures, 3MF drops textures and DAE leaves animations out. The page lists this before you save.
- A glTF or OBJ result is saved as a ZIP with the .bin or .mtl file and the textures next to the model.
- FBX, 3MF and DAE are written by a 7 MB add-on that loads once, from ToolRecipe itself, the first time you pick one of them.
Questions
Is the 3D model converter free, and is my file uploaded?
It is free, and there is no sign-up. The file is not uploaded: your browser does the conversion on your device.
How do I convert GLB to OBJ or STL to GLB?
Drop in the file, choose the new format under "Convert to" and press the button. Every pair of formats listed above works the same way.
Does the model keep its size?
Yes, when the file states its unit, it is carried across. If it does not, you say which unit the numbers are in. The size in the new file is shown before you save.
What gets lost in a conversion?
It depends on the two formats. The page lists what the new format cannot hold before you save, and checks the new file after writing.
