Lithophane generator

Turn a photo into a lithophane STL for 3D printing, flat or curved. Dark areas print thick and light areas thin, so the picture appears when light shines through. Free, online, and your photo stays in your browser.

How to make a lithophane from a photo

  1. 1Drop a photo in, or click to choose one
  2. 2Pick flat or curved, the width, thickness and detail
  3. 3Check the backlit preview and click "Save STL"
  4. An STL of the lithophane, ready to slice.

What happens to your photo

  • Your photo is not uploaded. The image is read and turned into a 3D relief by your browser, on your own device.
  • See it lit before you print.A backlit preview shows how the picture will look, next to the 3D relief.
  • Settings change the result live.Change the thickness or detail and the preview and size update by themselves.

What you can do

  • Make a flat plate, or a curved one bent around an arc of 10 to 360 degrees that you can stand up like a lamp.
  • Set the width in millimetres and the thinnest (light areas) and thickest (dark areas) thickness.
  • Choose the detail from very fine (0.1 mm) to coarse (0.5 mm) point spacing.
  • Add a solid border around the picture, or tick "Invert (light areas thick)" to reverse light and dark.
  • See size, triangle count and STL file size, then save the STL.

Good to know

  • The brightness of each pixel sets the thickness. Colour is ignored, so a photo with good contrast works best.
  • The thickest value must be larger than the thinnest, and all sizes must be above zero.
  • A very fine setting on a wide plate is capped at about 400000 points. The tool then spaces the points wider and tells you.
  • Print it upright, with 100 % infill and white PLA, and hold it to a light.
  • Transparent areas of an image count as light.

Questions

How do I make a lithophane from a photo?

Drop the photo in, choose the shape and size, check the backlit preview and save the STL. Then slice it and print it standing up.

Which photos work best?

Photos with clear contrast and a simple subject. A photo that is mostly mid-grey gives a flat, low-contrast lithophane.

Can I make a curved lithophane?

Yes. Choose "Curved" and set the curve in degrees. A full 360 degrees makes a closed cylinder.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It never leaves your browser. The relief is built and the STL is saved on your own device.
