Change volume
Make audio louder or quieter by a number of decibels. To increase MP3 volume, type a change like 6 dB, and the tool holds back before the loudest part distorts. It reads MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC and the sound of videos. Free to use, and nothing is uploaded: your browser does the work.
How to make audio louder or increase MP3 volume
- 1Drop an audio file in, or click to choose one
- 2Type the change in dB: 6 for louder, −6 for quieter
- 3Pick a format under "Save as" if you want another one
- 4Click "Change volume" and save the result
- The same recording, louder or quieter, saved to your device
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your file is read and processed by your browser, on your own device
- Louder without distortion. The file is listened through first, so the loudest sample stays just under full scale
- You see what was done. The result says by how many dB the volume was really changed
What you can do
- Raise or lower the volume by any amount from −40 to 40 dB. +6 is about twice as strong, −6 about half
- Leave "Stop before the loudest part distorts" ticked, and an increase is held back at the point where the loudest sample would reach full scale
- Save in the format the file already has, or as MP3, M4A (AAC), WAV or OGG (Opus)
- Open MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC and WebM files, and the sound of MP4, MOV and MKV videos
- Listen to the result in the player before you use it. It is also kept in "Results", from where it can go into another tool
- Keep the title, artist and album of the file: they are carried over where the new format holds them
Good to know
- The change is the same for the whole file. Loud and quiet parts keep their distance from each other: this is not a compressor
- With the box unticked, everything that would go past full scale is clipped there, and you hear that as distortion
- If the file is already as loud as it can be without distorting, the tool says so and saves nothing
- The sound is decoded and encoded again. "Same as the original" keeps the format at a bitrate not below the original's. A FLAC that is changed is saved as WAV, which is lossless too
- It works best in desktop Chrome or Edge. AMR, WMA, AIFF and MIDI files can't be read
Questions
How do I increase the volume of an MP3?
Drop the MP3 in, type a number such as 6 under "Change (dB)" and click "Change volume". The louder MP3 is saved to your device.
How can I make audio louder without distortion?
Keep "Stop before the loudest part distorts" ticked. The tool looks for the loudest sample first and raises the volume only as far as that sample allows. The result tells you how much it was.
Why was the volume raised less than I asked for?
The loudest part of your file was already close to full scale, and more would have clipped it. A recording that is quiet overall but has a few loud peaks can't be fixed by a plain volume change.
What is the difference with Normalize audio?
Here you choose the change yourself, in dB. Normalize audio measures the loudness and brings the file to a standard such as −16 LUFS. Both change the whole file by one amount.
Is my audio file uploaded?
No. Nothing is uploaded. The file is read and processed by your browser, on your own device.
