Normalize audio
Normalize audio online to a standard loudness: −16 LUFS for podcasts and speech, −14 for music streaming, −23 for broadcast, or the loudest point at −1 dB. The whole file is measured first, then made louder or quieter by one amount. Nothing is uploaded: your browser does the measuring.
How to normalize audio to a standard loudness
- 1Drop an audio file in, or click to choose one
- 2Choose a target under "Bring it to", such as −16 LUFS
- 3Click "Normalize" and wait while the file is measured
- 4Read how far the loudness moved and save the result
- The same recording at the loudness you chose
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your file is read and processed by your browser, on your own device
- Measured the standard way.Programme loudness as in ITU-R BS.1770, the measure behind LUFS, taken over the whole file
- The peaks stay safe. The loudest sample is never pushed past −1 dB, even if the file then ends below the target
What you can do
- Bring a recording to −16 LUFS (podcasts, speech), −14 LUFS (music streaming) or −23 LUFS (broadcast, EBU R 128)
- Choose "Loudest point at −1 dB (peak)" to raise or lower the file until its loudest sample sits at −1 dB
- See what happened in the result: from which loudness to which, in LUFS, and by how many dB
- Run several recordings through the same target, one after the other, so they play back about equally loud
- Save in the format the file already has, or as MP3, M4A (AAC), WAV or OGG (Opus)
- Open MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC and WebM files, and the sound of MP4, MOV and MKV videos
Good to know
- The whole file moves by one amount. The difference between its loud and quiet parts stays as it was: this is not a compressor
- A quiet recording with one loud peak may end below the target, because that peak may not pass −1 dB. The tool tells you when it stopped for that reason
- If the file is already at the target, the tool says so and saves nothing. A mono file is measured as one channel
- The sound is decoded and encoded again. "Same as the original" keeps the format at a bitrate not below the original's. A FLAC is saved as WAV, which is lossless too
- It works best in desktop Chrome or Edge. Long WAV files are large, about 10 MB per minute in stereo
Questions
How do I normalize an MP3?
Drop the MP3 in, choose a target under "Bring it to" and click "Normalize". The file is measured, changed as a whole and saved to your device as an MP3 again.
Which LUFS target should I pick?
−16 LUFS is the one for podcasts and speech, −14 LUFS the one for music on streaming services, and −23 LUFS the broadcast standard EBU R 128. If you only want the file as loud as it goes without clipping, pick the peak option.
Why is my file still quieter than the target?
Its loudest sample reached −1 dB before the target was met. The tool stops there, because more would distort that part. This happens with quiet recordings that have a few loud peaks.
Does normalizing even out loud and quiet parts?
No. It makes the whole file louder or quieter by one amount. A whisper stays as far below a shout as it was before.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. Nothing is uploaded. The file is read, measured and processed by your browser, on your own device.
