Shapefile to CSV
Convert Shapefile to CSV online, free and without signing up. Drop in the Shapefile file or paste its text, and save the CSV file. Names and positions carry across. Nothing is uploaded: your browser reads and writes the file on your device.
How to convert Shapefile to CSV
- 1Drop your Shapefile file in, or click to choose it
- 2Check the drawing and the notes on what carries over
- 3Save the CSV file
- A CSV file, named like the one you dropped in.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your Shapefile file is read and the CSV file is written by your browser, on your own device.
- No map tiles are loaded. The preview is a flat drawing of the file, so no location is sent anywhere.
- You see what is lost.Every file has notes on what CSV could not keep.
What you can do
- Convert Shapefile to CSV with one tool. You see a drawing of the points, lines and areas in the file, and the CSV text, before you save.
- Drop several files at once and save each one, or all of them together.
- Paste the text of a file instead of dropping it. GeoJSON, KML, GPX, WKT and CSV are recognised.
- Get a note for everything the CSV format cannot hold, such as areas in GPX or heart rate in KML, so nothing disappears quietly.
Good to know
- A shapefile is Esri's classic GIS format, split over .shp (shapes), .dbf (attributes) and .prj (coordinate system). Only WGS 84 longitude/latitude is read.
- CSV is a plain table. Here it needs latitude and longitude columns, and may have name, elevation, time and more; a track column groups rows into lines.
- Only longitude and latitude (WGS 84, EPSG:4326) are read. A file in another coordinate system is refused with a message to reproject it first.
- The tool writes GPX, KML, GeoJSON and CSV. GPX has no areas, so they are saved as closed tracks, and holes inside areas are left out.
- A CSV is read by its latitude and longitude columns. You choose whether its rows are separate points or one track.
- A file without a single point, line or area is not converted, and the page says what it found instead.
Questions
Is Shapefile to CSV free, and is my file uploaded?
It is free, and there is no sign-up. The file is not uploaded: your browser does the conversion on your device.
Do names, elevation and times stay?
They carry across wherever the CSV format has a place for them. What does not fit is listed under the drawing before you save.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Drop them together. Each gets its own card and its own save button, and "Save all" saves them in one go.
Does it work with a track from my GPS watch or phone?
Yes, when it is a GPX, TCX, FIT or KML file, or a CSV with latitude and longitude. The result is a normal CSV file you can open elsewhere.
