Geohash encoder/decoder
Encode coordinates as a geohash at the precision you choose, or decode a geohash back to its position. You get the size of the box the geohash covers and its centre, plus the same spot in all other coordinate formats. Free, in your browser.
How to encode or decode a geohash
- 1Type a position or a geohash, for example u2edk
- 2Choose the "Geohash precision", 1 to 12 characters
- 3Copy the geohash or the coordinates
- A geohash, or the centre and size of the box it covers.
What you get
- Both directions.Type coordinates to get a geohash, or a geohash to get the coordinates of its centre.
- You choose the precision.More characters give a smaller box. The tool shows its size, from kilometres down to centimetres.
- Nothing is sent. The geohash is worked out in your browser. No coordinates leave your device.
What you can do
- Encode a latitude and longitude as a geohash of 1 to 12 characters (9 by default). The geohash line is shown first, with a copy button.
- Decode a geohash by typing it. The tool says "Read as a geohash", gives the box it covers, for example in metres, and shows the centre as coordinates.
- See the same position as decimal degrees, DMS, DDM, UTM, MGRS and plus code underneath.
- Type coordinates in any usual notation, not only decimal degrees.
Good to know
- A geohash is a box, not a point. Decoding gives the centre of the box, which can be some distance from where you started.
- Boxes get smaller with each character, but they are not square: at the same precision a box is narrower far from the equator.
- Two spots close together can have very different geohashes if a box edge runs between them. A shared start of the geohash means close, but close does not always mean a shared start.
- The tool does not draw a map. It shows the box size and the coordinates.
Questions
What is a geohash?
A short code for an area on Earth. Each extra character makes the area smaller, and places that are close usually share the first characters.
How do I decode a geohash to coordinates?
Type the geohash, for example u2edk. The tool shows the latitude and longitude of the centre of its box and the size of the box.
How many characters should I use?
Few characters for a rough area, more for a precise one. The "Geohash precision" list shows 1 to 12, and the tool gives the box size for your choice.
Are my coordinates sent to a server?
No. The code runs in your browser and makes no request with your input.
