Straighten image
Straighten a crooked photo: turn it by any angle, a tenth of a degree at a time, over a grid, or draw a line along the horizon or a wall and the photo turns until that line is level. The empty corners are cut away or filled. The photo keeps its full resolution and is processed on your device, not uploaded for processing.
How to straighten a photo
- 1Drop a picture in or click to choose it
- 2Drag along the horizon or a wall, or set the angle with the slider
- 3Choose what happens to the empty corners
- 4Press "Save picture"
- The same picture, level, at its full size
What happens to your files
- Processed on your device. The picture is opened, turned and saved in your browser. It is not uploaded for processing
- Full resolution. The turn is made on the picture's own pixels, not on the smaller preview you see on the screen
- A new file, without extras. The file is written new from the turned pixels: no EXIF data, no GPS position, no preview of the original
What you can do
- Turn the picture by any angle from -45° to 45° in steps of 0.1°, with the slider or by typing the number. The grid over the picture stays still while the picture turns, so you can line a horizon up with it
- Drag a line along the horizon, a wall or a door frame: the picture turns until that line is level, or upright if the line runs up and down
- Choose what happens to the empty corners: "Cut them away" keeps the largest rectangle inside, "Fill with a colour" keeps the whole picture on a background in your colour, and a PNG can also "Leave them see-through"
- Turn the picture a quarter left or right, or upside down, under "Turn 90°". An angle you set is kept
- Fix the perspective of a photographed sheet, painting or screen under "Perspective" by dragging four corners
- It works with the keyboard too: on the slider each arrow key turns the picture by 0.1°
Good to know
- A JPG and an iPhone photo (HEIC) are saved as JPG at quality 92. PNG, WebP and other formats are saved as PNG, which keeps see-through parts. The name gets "-straightened" added
- Cutting the corners away makes the picture a little smaller, and more so the further you turn it. At 5°, a 4000 × 3000 photo becomes 3778 × 2678 pixels
- A phone photo taken sideways is turned upright first, so the grid and the line work on the picture as you see it
- Pictures up to 200 megapixels open on a computer and up to 64 on a phone. A result above 50 megapixels (16 on a phone) is saved smaller, and the tool says so before you save
- Animated pictures (GIF, animated PNG or WebP) and files with several pages are not opened, because only the first frame would be kept
Questions
How do I straighten a crooked horizon?
Drag a line along the horizon on the picture. The picture turns by the angle of that line and the empty corners are cut away. Adjust it with the slider if you want, then press "Save picture".
Why does the picture get smaller?
Once it is turned, the picture no longer fills a rectangle and its corners are empty. "Cut them away" keeps the largest rectangle with no empty corner in it. Choose "Fill with a colour" to keep the whole picture.
Can I make a photo of a building stand straight?
If the whole building leans, yes: drag a line along a wall or a door frame and the picture turns it upright. Walls that lean towards each other because of the camera's angle need "Perspective" and its four corners.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The picture is opened, turned and saved in your browser.
Does straightening lower the quality?
Turning by an angle mixes neighbouring pixels, which softens the picture very slightly. A JPG is saved as a new JPG at quality 92. A quarter turn of a PNG keeps every pixel exactly.
