Color shades & tints
Make shades and tints of a color: lighter steps mixed with white, darker steps mixed with black, and softer tones mixed with gray. Choose 5, 8 or 10 steps of each and copy them all as CSS variables. Free, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
How to make shades and tints of a color
- 1Type your color or choose it with the color picker
- 2Pick the number of "Steps": 5, 8 or 10
- 3Choose sRGB or OKLab under "Mix in"
- 4Copy single colors, or "Copy all as CSS variables"
- Rows of tints, shades and tones, ready to copy
What the tool makes
- Three rows at once.Tints with white, shades with black and tones with gray, all from the same color
- Even steps. With 10 steps the mix runs from 9 % to 91 %, so no step is pure white, black or your own color
- Nothing is sent anywhere. The steps are worked out by your browser, on your own device
What you can do
- Start from a color typed as #hex, rgb(), hsl(), lab(), oklch(), a CSS color name or a Tailwind name
- Get 5, 8 or 10 tints, shades and tones, each with its share of white, black or gray shown under it
- Mix in "sRGB (like most design tools)", the preset, or in "OKLab (even steps to the eye)"
- Copy any step as HEX with one click
- Copy every step at once as CSS variables in a :root block, named --tint-1, --shade-1, --tone-1 and so on
Good to know
- Tones are mixed with a middle gray, #808080
- sRGB gives the steps most design tools give. OKLab makes the steps look more even
- The steps are not a Tailwind or Material scale. For those, use the Tailwind or Material palette generator
Questions
What is the difference between a shade, a tint and a tone?
A tint is a color mixed with white, a shade is a color mixed with black, and a tone is a color mixed with gray. The tool makes all three from your color.
How do I get lighter and darker versions of a HEX color?
Type the HEX value and read the tints for lighter versions and the shades for darker ones. Each step has a copy button.
Can I use the steps as CSS variables?
Yes. "Copy all as CSS variables" copies a :root block with every tint, shade and tone, such as --tint-1: #3971ed; for the preset blue.
Are my colors sent anywhere?
No. Everything is worked out by your browser on your own device. No request is made with your color.
