Material palette generator
Make Material Design 3 tonal palettes from one color, the way Material You does: primary, secondary, tertiary, neutral, neutral variant and error, each in 13 tones from 0 to 100. Built on Google's own material-color-utilities. Copy everything as CSS variables. Free and online.

- 78 tones as HEX, ready to paste as CSS variables
What you get
- Google's own code.material-color-utilities, the library behind Material You and Material 3
- Six palettes, 13 tones.Tones 0, 10 to 90, 95, 99 and 100 for each of the six key colors
- Any color notation.Type #hex, rgb(), hsl(), oklch() or a CSS name, or use the picker
What you can do
- Turn one source color into the six tonal palettes of Material Design 3: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Neutral, Neutral variant and Error
- See the tones 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 95, 99 and 100 of each palette, with HEX code and copy button
- Copy all 78 tones as CSS variables named like Material's tokens, for example --md-ref-palette-primary40
- Type the source color as #hex, rgb(), hsl(), lab(), oklch() or a CSS color name, or choose it with the color picker
Good to know
- The tone is the lightness: 0 is black, 100 is white. The palettes are worked out in Google's HCT color space
- The primary palette keeps your hue but gets a chroma of at least 48, so a grayish source color comes out more colorful
- Secondary keeps the hue with little chroma, tertiary turns the hue by 60 degrees, and the error palette is the same red for every source color
- The tool makes the tonal palettes, not a full theme with roles such as onPrimary or surface
Questions
What is a tonal palette in Material Design 3?
One color in a row of lightness steps, from tone 0 (black) to tone 100 (white). Material 3 builds its color roles from tones of six such palettes.
Does it use Google's official Material color algorithm?
Yes. The palettes come from Google's material-color-utilities, the code Material You uses, here running in your browser. Your source color is not sent anywhere.
How do I use the palette in CSS?
Click "Copy all as CSS variables" and paste the :root block into your stylesheet. Then use a tone with var(--md-ref-palette-primary40), for example.
Why is my primary palette more colorful than my color?
Material 3 gives the primary palette a chroma of at least 48. A soft or grayish source color is made stronger there, while its hue stays the same.
