Complementary color finder
Find the complementary color of any color, along with its split complementary, analogous, triadic, tetradic and square partners. All six color harmonies appear at once, with the angle of each turn on the color wheel. Free, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
How to find a complementary color
- 1Type your color or choose it with the color picker
- 2Pick the wheel under "Turn the hue on"
- 3Read the six harmonies and copy the colors you want
- Your color with its partners in six color harmonies
How it works
- Six harmonies at once.Complementary, split, analogous, triadic, tetradic and square, each starting from your color
- Two color wheels. The HSL wheel of design tools, or OKLCH, where the partners keep the lightness of your color
- Nothing is sent anywhere. The colors are worked out by your browser, on your own device
What you can do
- Start from a color typed as #hex, rgb(), hsl(), lab(), oklch(), a CSS color name or a Tailwind name
- Get the complementary color at 180°, the split complementary pair at 150° and 210°, and the analogous neighbors at minus 30° and plus 30°
- Get the triadic colors at 120° and 240°, the tetradic rectangle at 60°, 180° and 240°, and the square at 90°, 180° and 270°
- Turn the hue on the "Color wheel (HSL, as in design tools)" or on "OKLCH (same lightness to the eye)"
- Copy any color as HEX with one click
Good to know
- The two wheels give different partners. For #E4572E the complement is #2EBBE4 on the HSL wheel and #009EBF in OKLCH
- A gray has no hue, so its complement is the same gray
- Only the hue turns and lightness stays, so a pale color gets pale partners
- For a ready palette of five colors with lighter and darker steps, use the palette generator
Questions
What is the complementary color of a color?
It is the color on the opposite side of the color wheel, turned 180°. The complement of #E4572E, a warm orange red, is #2EBBE4, a light blue, on the HSL wheel.
What is the difference between triadic and tetradic?
Triadic colors are three colors evenly spread, 120° apart. Tetradic uses four colors in a rectangle on the wheel: your color, plus 60°, 180° and 240°.
Which color wheel should I use?
The HSL wheel gives the same partners as most design tools. OKLCH keeps the lightness the eye sees, so the partners look just as light as your color.
Are my colors sent anywhere?
No. The harmonies are worked out by your browser on your own device. No request is made with your color.
