Open an Excel file (.xlsx or .xls), OpenDocument, Numbers or CSV spreadsheet and look through it in your browser, without Excel. You get a grid with column letters, row numbers, a formula bar and a tab for every sheet. Nothing is uploaded.

How to open an Excel file without Excel

What you can do

  • Open Excel (.xlsx, .xls), OpenDocument (.ods), Apple Numbers, CSV, TSV and JSON files.
  • Switch between sheets with the tabs along the bottom.
  • Click a cell, or move with the arrow keys, to see its full content in the formula bar. A formula shows as itself, with the equals sign.
  • Switch from Grid to Pages to see the sheet laid out as printed pages, with a zoom.
  • See the size of each sheet in rows and columns below the grid.

Good to know

  • This is a viewer only. You cannot edit cells or save changes here. Use the spreadsheet converter to turn a file into another format.
  • At most the first 500 rows and 60 columns of a sheet are drawn. The status line tells you when a sheet is longer.
  • Cells show the values saved in the file. A formula that was never calculated is shown as the formula.
  • One file at a time. Charts and pictures are not shown.

How can I open an XLSX file without Excel?

Drop it onto this page. The sheets are shown in your browser, so you do not need Excel, Office or any app.

Is my spreadsheet uploaded?

No. The file is read and drawn by your browser on your own device. It is never sent to us or anyone else.

Can I see the formulas?

Yes. Click a cell and its content appears in the formula bar. Cells with a formula start with an equals sign there.

Can I edit the spreadsheet here?

No, this page is for looking only. To get the data in another format, such as CSV or JSON, use the spreadsheet converter.
