HDRI viewer
Preview an HDR or EXR environment map before you use it. Drop in the file and see it as a backdrop, with three test spheres lit by it: a mirror, a glossy metal and a matte grey. Change the exposure and the tone mapping. Nothing is uploaded.
How to preview an HDRI online
- 1Drop an HDR or EXR file in, or click to choose it
- 2Move the Exposure slider and pick a Tone mapping
- 3Turn the view and read the brightness figures
- The environment, the test spheres and its light values.
What happens to your file
- Nothing is uploaded.Your HDRI is read and lit by your browser, on your own device.
- Real light values. It reports the brightest pixel and the average, with 1 as white paper.
- Three ways to see it.Compare ACES Filmic, AgX, Khronos Neutral or no tone mapping.
What you can do
- Open .hdr, .exr and .rgbe environment maps in equirectangular layout.
- Slide the exposure from -6 to +6 EV and see how the lighting and the background react.
- Switch between ACES Filmic, AgX, Khronos Neutral and "None (clipped)" to compare tone mapping.
- Judge the light on three spheres: a mirror, a glossy metal and a matte one. Hide them with "Test spheres".
- Read the size in pixels, the brightest value, the average and how many stops the sun or lamps sit above white.
Good to know
- The file must be equirectangular, a flat picture twice as wide as it is high.
- If the brightest value is hardly above white, the viewer says it may not be a true HDR.
- A file ending in .exr is read as EXR. Any other file is read as a Radiance HDR.
- This tool only shows the map. It does not convert or save it.
Questions
Is my HDRI uploaded?
No. Your browser reads the file and lights the spheres on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
What is an HDRI?
A 360° picture that stores real brightness, not just 0 to 255. Artists use it to light 3D scenes and reflections.
Why is my map flat and grey?
The values may stay near white. Check the brightest figure: a true HDR has values well above 1.
Which tone mapping should I pick?
None clips everything above white. ACES Filmic, AgX and Khronos Neutral compress the bright parts in different ways, so compare them.
