PDF table of contents
Make a table of contents for a PDF: the tool finds the headings by their size, weight and numbering and turns them into nested, clickable bookmarks, up to ten levels deep. You check and fix the list before anything is written. Free, and the file stays on your device.
How to add a table of contents to a PDF
- 1Drop your PDF in, or click to choose it
- 2Check the headings found: fix a level, a title or a page, remove extras
- 3Tick “Also put a printed contents page at the front” if you want one
- 4Click “Save PDF with bookmarks”
- The same PDF, with bookmarks in your viewer's side panel
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your PDF is read and written by your browser, on your own device
- The rest stays as it was.Pages, text, forms and links are kept, only the bookmarks are new
- You decide what goes in.Every heading found is shown in a list you can change before saving
What you can do
- Find headings in reports, theses, papers and manuals, by font size, bold type and numbers like 2.3.1
- Leave out running heads, page numbers, figure captions and contents lines the PDF already has
- Move a heading a level up or down, change its words or page, add an entry or remove one
- Ask for “Fewer headings” or “More headings” when the first list is too long or too short
- Start from the bookmarks the file already has and change those
- Add a printed contents page at the front, with dotted lines, page numbers and links to each heading
Good to know
- A scanned PDF has no text, so no headings can be found in it. It needs text recognition first
- Headings are found by how they look. A heading that looks just like the body text is missed: add it by hand
- The printed contents page shows Latin letters only. Bookmarks can hold any script, Greek or Chinese too
- A password-protected PDF can't be changed. Unlock it first, then open it here
- Headings are looked for in the first 2000 pages of a longer file
Questions
How do I add bookmarks to a PDF?
Open the PDF here, check the headings the tool found and click “Save PDF with bookmarks”. Your PDF viewer then shows them in its side panel, and a click jumps to the heading.
Can it make a clickable table of contents page?
Yes. Tick “Also put a printed contents page at the front”. Each line has the heading, a dotted line and the page number, and the whole line is a link.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It is read and written by your browser, on your own device. It is never sent to us or anyone else.
Why are some headings missing or wrong?
The tool goes by size, bold type and numbering. Try “More headings” or “Fewer headings”, then fix the rest in the list by hand.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Not directly. A scan is a picture of a page without text, so it needs text recognition first.
