Search a PDF

Search a PDF for a word or phrase, free and online. Every match is listed with its page and the words around it, so in a long document you can pick the one you mean. Nothing is uploaded.

How to search text in a PDF

  1. 1Drop your PDF in, or click to choose it
  2. 2Type a word or phrase in the search box
  3. 3Pick a match in the list to jump to its page
  4. Every match, with its page and context.

What happens to your files

  • Nothing is uploaded.Your PDF is opened and searched by your browser, on your own device.
  • Matches in context. Each hit shows its page and the words before and after it.
  • Works offline.Once the tool has been opened, it needs no connection.

What you can do

  • Search the whole document at once. The search ignores upper and lower case.
  • See all matches in a list with page number and surrounding text, and click one to go to it.
  • Step through the matches with Enter, or Shift and Enter to go back. The hits are marked on the page.
  • Open a password-protected PDF by typing its password.

Good to know

  • Only text that is in the PDF can be found. A scan is just a picture of text, so it has no matches.
  • The list shows the first 300 matches. The page still marks all of them.
  • The search looks for the phrase you typed, not for similar words.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded when I search it?

No. The file is read and searched by your browser on your own device. It is never sent to us or anyone else.

Is the search case sensitive?

No. "invoice" also finds "Invoice" and "INVOICE".

Why does my scanned PDF show no matches?

A scan holds images of pages, not text. The search can only read text that the PDF contains.

Can I search a PDF with a password?

Yes. The tool asks for the password when you open the file, then searches as usual.
