Redact PDF
Black out names, email addresses, IBANs, phone numbers or any area of a PDF. The text and image pixels underneath are removed for real, not just covered, and the result is checked before it is done. Nothing is uploaded.
How to redact a PDF

What happens to your files

What you can do
- Drag over text to mark it, or switch to "Mark area" and draw a box over anything, such as a signature or a photo.
- Use "Find and mark" to mark every email address, IBAN or phone number, or every match of a word or phrase.
- See all marks as red outlines first, jump to any page from the list and remove single marks.
- Apply them in one go: text and image pixels are removed, a black box is drawn, and links, comments and form fields under it go too.
- Clear the document title, author and other details as part of applying.
Good to know
- Marks are only outlines until you press "Apply redactions". If you save with marks pending, you are asked what to do.
- IBANs are recognised by their country length. Phone numbers are found by pattern, so look over the list before you apply.
- Text inside a scanned image is a picture. Mark the area on a scan, since there is no text to find.
- After applying, Undo still works in this session, but the saved file cannot be undone. Keep the original.
- A password-protected PDF has to be opened without the password first.
Questions
Is a black rectangle in a PDF viewer enough?
No. A box drawn on top leaves the text underneath selectable. Here the text is removed from the file.
How do I redact all email addresses in a PDF?
Open the PDF, choose "All email addresses" under "Find and mark", press the button and check the list, then apply.
Can I redact a scanned PDF?
Yes, with "Mark area". The pixels under the box are overwritten.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. Redaction runs in your browser, which matters for contracts and personal data.
