Tip calculator
Tip calculator: type the bill, pick a tip percentage and see the tip, the total and what each person pays. Split between up to 100 people, round the total or each share up, and leave tax out of the tip if the bill already includes it. Amounts are worked out in whole cents, so the shares always add up to the total.
How to work out a tip
- 1Type the amount on the bill
- 2Pick 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent, or type your own
- 3Set how many people share and whether to round up
- The tip, the total and the amount for each person
What you get
- Tip and total.Rounded once to the cent, so no strange 0.01 differences
- A fair split. When the cents don't divide evenly, the page tells you who pays one cent more
- Round numbers.Round the total or each share up to a whole amount and see what that adds
What you can do
- Work out a tip from any percentage between 0 and 100
- Split the bill between 1 and 100 people
- Round the total up, or round each person's share up
- Tip on the amount before tax when tax is already in the bill
- Show the amounts in euros, dollars, pounds, francs or without a currency sign
Good to know
- The quick buttons follow the habit in the US, where 15 to 20 percent at a restaurant is common. In German and Dutch the page offers 5, 10 and 15 percent, since tips there are usually smaller
- You can type the amount with a point or a comma: 45.50 and 45,50 both work
- Rounding up changes the tip, and the page shows the new percentage
- Nothing you type is kept or sent anywhere
Questions
How do I calculate a 20 percent tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.2. On 45.50 that is 9.10, so the total is 54.60. The calculator does this for any percentage.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Many people tip on the amount before tax. Tick the tax box and type the rate on your bill, and the tip is worked out on the amount before tax.
What if the total doesn't split evenly?
The leftover cents go to some people, one cent each. The page shows how many pay which amount, and the shares add up exactly to the total.
How much should I tip in my country?
Habits differ by country and by kind of service, so the page doesn't give a table. Use the percentage you think fits.
