Color palette to ASE/GPL
Turn a list of colors into a palette file: save it as .ase for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, or as .gpl for GIMP, Inkscape and Krita. You can also open an .ase or .gpl file and convert it to the other format. Free and online, and nothing is uploaded.
How to make an ASE or GPL palette file
- 1Type or paste your colors, one per line, with a name if you like
- 2Or click "Open an .ase or .gpl file" to load a palette
- 3Give it a "Palette name"
- 4Click "Save as .ase (Adobe)" or "Save as .gpl (GIMP, Inkscape, Krita)"
- A swatch file for Adobe programs, GIMP, Inkscape or Krita
What happens to your file
- Nothing is uploaded.Your colors and any file you open are read and written by your browser
- Both ways.Open an .ase file and save it as .gpl, or the other way round
- Names are kept.A name before or after a color goes into the file with it
What you can do
- Write colors in almost any notation, one per line: #hex, rgb(), hsl(), oklch(), a CSS color name and more
- Keep a name with each color, before or after it, such as "Primary #2563EB" or "#F59E0B accent"
- Save up to 256 colors as an Adobe Swatch Exchange file (.ase) or as a GIMP palette (.gpl)
- Open an .ase or .gpl file, see its colors, change the list and save it again in either format
- See every color as a swatch while you type, and which lines could not be read as a color
Good to know
- Colors are saved as RGB. Spot and global colors from an opened ASE file become ordinary RGB swatches
- CMYK, Lab and gray colors from an ASE file are turned into RGB with a plain formula, without a color profile, so CMYK colors can shift a little
- Opened files can be up to 1 MB. Only the first 256 colors of the list go into a saved file
- The palette name becomes the file name, and the ASE file holds the colors in one group of that name
Questions
How do I create an ASE file from HEX codes?
Paste the HEX codes into the list, one per line, give the palette a name and click "Save as .ase (Adobe)". Then load the file in the Swatches panel of Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign.
What is a GPL file?
A GIMP palette: a plain text file with one color per line, as red, green and blue numbers with a name. GIMP, Inkscape and Krita read it.
Can I convert an ASE file to GPL?
Yes. Click "Open an .ase or .gpl file", choose the ASE file, then click "Save as .gpl (GIMP, Inkscape, Krita)". It works the other way round too.
Are my palette files uploaded?
No. The files are read and written by your browser on your own device. No request is made with them.
