Compress AVIF

Shrink AVIF images with a quality slider, online and free. AVIF is a newer format that already packs photos tightly, and this tool writes it with its own encoder, so it works the same in every browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress AVIF images

  1. 1Drop your AVIF images in, or click to choose them
  2. 2Set the quality with the slider
  3. 3Press "Compress" and save the result
  4. Smaller AVIF files, never bigger than before.

What happens to your files

  • Nothing is uploaded.Your images are read and compressed by your browser, on your own device.
  • Never bigger. If a file cannot get smaller, the original comes back as it is.
  • Many at once.Add a batch and get one ZIP with every result.

What you can do

  • Set the quality from 30 to 95, starting at 75.
  • See the size before and after for each file, and the percentage saved.
  • Compress several images and get them as one ZIP.
  • Mix in PNG, JPG or WebP files: each is compressed in its own format.

Good to know

  • The file stays an AVIF. Not every older program opens AVIF, so check where it must be used.
  • AVIF takes longer to encode than JPG, so a big photo can need a few seconds. The row shows "Compressing…" while it works.
  • A file that cannot get smaller comes back as the original.
  • The encoder loads when you press "Compress", so the first run needs a moment.

Questions

Why is compressing AVIF slow?

AVIF is expensive to encode. A large photo can take a few seconds, and a batch runs through the files in turn.

Does it need a recent browser?

The encoder is built in, so it does not depend on the browser's own AVIF support to write the file.

Is the image sent to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
