Compress PNG
Compress PNG images online and free, with fewer colors or a lossless clean-up, and save the smaller copy. PNG has no quality slider of its own, so you choose the method. Nothing is uploaded: your browser does the work.
How to compress PNG images
- 1Drop your PNG images in, or click to choose them
- 2Pick the PNG method and the number of colors
- 3Press "Compress" and save the result
- Smaller PNG files, never bigger than before.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your images are read and compressed by your browser, on your own device.
- Never bigger. If a file cannot get smaller, the original comes back as it is.
- Many at once.Add a batch and get one ZIP with every result.
What you can do
- Choose "Fewer colors (smallest file)" for the biggest saving, or "Lossless (every pixel stays)" when the picture must not change at all.
- Set the colors to up to 256, 128, 64, 32 or 16. The first choice looks the same as the original in most pictures.
- With "Fewer colors" the tool also tries a lossless version and keeps whichever file is smaller.
- Compress a whole batch and get one ZIP, or a single file saved as itself.
Good to know
- Transparency stays when the PNG is saved as PNG.
- The tool follows each file's own format: a JPG dropped in here is compressed as JPG, and the quality slider appears for it.
- Fewer colors can show as banding in smooth gradients. Try 256 first, then go lower.
- HEIC photos come out as JPG, and formats that cannot be written come out as PNG.
Questions
How do I make a PNG smaller without losing quality?
Choose "Lossless (every pixel stays)". The tool repacks the pixels more tightly, so the picture is identical and the file is usually somewhat smaller.
Why does a PNG not have a quality slider?
PNG stores every pixel exactly. The way to shrink it a lot is to use fewer colors, which is what the first method does.
Can the file get bigger?
No. If nothing beats the original, the original comes back and the row says so.
