Black & white photo
Turn a photo black and white (grayscale), or a whole batch of photos at once. Pick one of four looks: grey, high contrast, sepia, or "Document" for a photo of a page or a whiteboard. Your browser does the work at full size and does not upload the photos.
How to make a photo black and white
- 1Drop one or more pictures in, or click to choose them
- 2Pick "Grey", "High contrast", "Sepia" or "Document"
- 3Press the save button: one picture as a file, several as one ZIP
- Your photos in black and white, at full size
What happens to your files
- Processed on your device.Your browser opens the photos and changes them. They are not uploaded for processing
- Many photos at once.Drop a whole stack in and save them together as one ZIP
- A clean new file. Each file is written fresh from the new pixels, so it carries no EXIF data, GPS position or preview of the original
What you can do
- "Grey" turns colors into the greys the eye sees: green looks lighter than red, and red lighter than blue
- "High contrast" pulls the darkest parts to black and the brightest to white, with deeper shadows and brighter highlights in between
- "Sepia" gives the brown tone of an old photo. Its "Strength" slider goes from 0 (plain grey) to 100 (full brown) and starts at 80
- "Document" makes a photo of a page, a receipt or a whiteboard pure black on white. Each spot is compared with its surroundings, so a shadow across the page does not turn into a black patch
- With several pictures, the arrows above the picture show each one in the look you picked. Tick "Show the original" to compare
Good to know
- JPG and iPhone photos (HEIC) are saved as JPG at quality 92. PNG, WebP and other formats are saved as PNG, and see-through parts stay see-through. The name gets "-black-and-white", "-high-contrast", "-sepia" or "-document"
- One look goes for every picture in a batch. For different looks, save in separate rounds
- Animated pictures and files with several pages don't open here. In a batch they are left out of the ZIP, and the tool names them
- Pictures up to 200 megapixels open on a computer, up to 64 on a phone. Above 50 (16 on a phone) a picture is scaled down first
- "Document" works best on a sharp photo taken straight from above. Colored areas and photos on the page turn into black dots or patches
Questions
How do I make a picture black and white?
Drop the picture in. "Grey" is picked to begin with, so you can press "Save picture" straight away, or pick another look first.
Can I convert many photos to black and white at once?
Yes. Choose or drop them all together. The look you pick goes for all of them, and the save button puts them in one ZIP.
What is the difference between grayscale and black and white?
Grayscale keeps every shade of grey between black and white, which is the "Grey" look. Pure black and white has only those two and suits text: that is "Document".
Can I get the colors back?
No. A black and white file has no colors left in it. Your original file is not changed, so keep it.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Your browser opens the photos, changes them and writes the new files too.
