Censor part of image
Censor part of a picture: draw boxes over a name, a face or a number plate and black it out, pixelate it or blur it. The covered part is replaced in the picture itself, and the saved file carries no EXIF data, no GPS position and no preview of the original. The picture is processed on your device, not uploaded for processing.
How to censor part of a picture
- 1Drop a picture in or click to choose it
- 2Drag over the picture to draw a box over what should be hidden
- 3Choose "Black bar", "Pixels" or "Blur" for each box
- 4Press "Save picture"
- The same picture, with the boxed parts covered for good
What happens to your files
- Processed on your device. The picture is opened and changed in your browser. It is not uploaded for processing
- Replaced, not covered up.The pixels inside a box are overwritten. There is no layer that someone could lift off again
- A new file, without extras. The file is written again from the picture alone: no EXIF data, no position, no preview of the original
What you can do
- Draw as many boxes as you need. Drag a box to move it, drag a corner to resize it, and remove it with "Delete box". "Undo" takes back your last step
- "Black bar" fills the box with one solid colour. Black is the default, and "Bar colour" lets you pick another
- "Pixels" cuts the box into a few large squares, each in its average colour. "Blur" keeps the same few averages and joins them softly. The larger the box, the larger the squares
- The picture you see while you work is the result. Each box is put into the picture right away, so you can check it before you save
- It works with the keyboard too: "Add a box", the arrow keys to move it, Shift with the arrow keys to resize it, Delete to remove it
- A phone photo that was taken sideways is turned upright first, so a box lands where you drew it
Good to know
- Only a black bar cannot be guessed back. Pixels and blur keep a few average colours of what was there. That hides a face or a line of text from the eye, but it is weaker than a bar
- A PNG is saved as PNG. A JPG and an iPhone photo (HEIC) are saved as JPG at quality 92, which costs a little sharpness in the whole picture. Other formats are saved as PNG. The name gets "-censored" added
- Animated pictures (GIF, animated PNG or WebP) and files with several pages are not opened. Covering only the first frame would leave the others as they are
- A picture keeps its size up to 50 megapixels on a computer and 16 on a phone. A larger one is made smaller to that limit, and the tool says so. Above 200 megapixels (64 on a phone) it is not opened
- A picture with see-through parts stays see-through outside the boxes. A black bar is always fully opaque
Questions
Can someone undo the censoring and see what was underneath?
Not under a black bar: those pixels are replaced with one colour, and the saved file is a new file without the original inside. Pixels and blur leave a few average colours, so use a bar for anything that must not be worked out.
Is it enough to pixelate or blur text?
It hides the text from the eye. For passwords, account numbers or ID numbers use a black bar: with pixels and blur, guesses can sometimes be checked against the colours that are left.
Does the saved picture still contain the location or other EXIF data?
No. The file is written again from the picture alone, so the camera's data, the GPS position and the small preview picture that a camera stores are not in it.
How do I black out part of a screenshot?
Drop the screenshot in, drag a box over the part, leave it on "Black bar" and press "Save picture". You get a PNG of the same size.
Can I redact a picture on a phone?
The tool is made for touch as well: you draw, move and resize the boxes with a finger. On a phone a picture above 16 megapixels is made smaller first.
